Background

Updated: 3rd July 2009

UK high street retailer Marks and Spencer might be more famous for its clothes, but food plays a big role in the company’s strategy.

Besides the food halls in its more than 400 stores throughout the UK, the company also operates a growing number of standalone food stores.

Its Simply Food convenience store format was launched in 2001 as an attempt to make M&S’s popular food products available to a wider audience. The company now has more than 100 Simply Food stores, including outlets in train stations and motorway service stations.

Marks & Spencer’s food is positioned at the top end – its advertisements focus on the quality of the food, rather than the price. The company sells only its own-brand food.

In September 2002, M&S announced that it had become the first ever food retailer to use only free-range eggs in its products.
