Formed through the merger in 2000 of two of Northern Europe's largest dairy companies, Swedish-based Arla Foods and Denmark’s MD Foods, Arla Foods is a dairy cooperative owned by milk producers in Denmark and Sweden. Arla Foods trades in 120 countries worldwide, with production facilities in Denmark, the UK, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Poland and Norway. Accounting for 40% of turnover, liquid milk products are Arla Foods' largest product area. With a share of just over 25% of total turnover, cheese is Arla Foods' second-largest product area. The largest markets are Sweden, Germany, Denmark and other EU countries. Saudi Arabia, Japan and US are also important markets.
