A&P, or The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, is a food retailer founded in 1859. At the company’s peak in the 1920s, the company had around 14,000 stores. Now, A&P operates 410 stores in the US under 8 retail banners, which include conventional supermarkets, food and drug combination stores, and discount food stores. In March 2007, A&P agreed a deal to buy regional retailer Pathmark for US$1.3bn. Once the transaction is complete, the enlarged company would become a $9bn supermarket chain operating in the New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia metro areas, as well as in Baltimore/Washington DC, Michigan and Louisiana.
