Auchan, the France-based retailer, has its origins in the north of the country. Gérard Mulliez opened his first store in Roubaix in 1961 in the Hauts Champs district of the town – the district from which the company takes its name. The first Auchan hypermarket opened in 1967. The next decade saw Auchan build its business throughout France before the company moved overseas with the acquisition of Alcampo in Spain. In 1989, Auchan entered the Italian market with the opening of a hypermarket in the country. The 1990s saw a series of acquistions in France (Atac) and overseas (Spain, Italy and Portugal). Between 1996 and 1999, the company moved into Luxembourg, Poland, Hungary and China. Auchan continued into expand east as the 21st century began, with a move into Russia, Romania and, in 2007, into Ukraine. As of June 2008, Auchan is present in ten countries outside France. The company has 400 domestic stores. Auchan
