Japan's Ajinomoto produces food seasonings, cooking oils, foods and pharmaceuticals. The company’s signature product, monosodium glutamate (MSG) seasoning, was first marketed in Japan in 1909, having been discovered and patented by Kikunae Ikeda. The company rapidly expanded to other countries, with Ajinomoto US established in 1956. Ajinomoto is now active in 23 countries and regions worldwide. In April 2004, Ajinomoto Frozen Foods, a unit of Ajinomoto, signed a contract with China's Xiamen Ideal Group and Japan's Life Foods to set up a joint venture to produce frozen vegetables, called Xiamen Ajinomoto Life Ideal Foods. Two years later the company established a joint venture with five companies in China to produce ingredients for its cup-a-soup range. Under the agreement, Knorr Foods, Xiamen Ajinomoto Life Ideal Foods, Ajinomoto China, and Xiamen Ideal Group, established a new company Xiamen Ajiraku Ideal Foods capitalided at about USD$5.6m.
