US-based Kellogg is the world's largest producer of cereal. The company, which has its global HQ in Michigan, is best known for brands like Special K and Coco Pops but also produces convenience foods, including cookies, crackers and frozen waffles. Kellogg, formed in 1906, has manufacturing operations in 19 countries and markets in brands in more than 180 countries around the world. In many Western markets, Kellogg competes with Cereal Partners Worldwide, the venture between Nestle and General Mills. Under the stewardship of CEO David Mackay, who took the helm at Kellogg in 2006, the company has looked to grow through acquisition at home and abroad. 2008 was a year in which Kellogg struck a series of deals, including the acquisition of Russian biscuit and cereal business The United Bakers Group and the takeover of Specialty Cereals in Australia.
