With APSS™, Sensient Flavors offers a new line of natural flavors which optimize the sweetness profile of calorie-reduced products. The new range enables food and beverage manufacturers to create a sugar-like sweetness while masking the undesirable off-tastes which are often caused by high intensity sweeteners. The APSS™ range can be labeled as “natural flavoring”.

APSS™ is a development based on Sensient’s proprietary extraction technologies and the selective application of natural extracts. As a liquid flavor, it is completely soluble and stable in a wide range of food and beverage applications. Sensory testing has confirmed that APSS™ enhances the perception of sweetness and masks undesirable off-tastes associated with the use of high intensity sweeteners. In fact, tests found that the worse the aftertaste of the sweetener, the bigger the improvement impact of APSS™.

From a regulatory point of view, manufacturers can create completely natural sweetening solutions by combining APSS™ with a natural high intensity sweetener such as stevia. The innovative and natural flavor range can also work on its own as a flavoring solution, is suitable for kosher products and adds no calories to the final application.

Dirk Fichtner, European Managing Director at Sensient Flavors and Fragrances: “The demand for calorie-reduced foods and drinks is still rising. With APSS™, manufacturers can achieve significant sugar reduction while maintaining both the mouthfeel and the natural sweetness profile of sucrose. Due to its masking effect, this new line makes undesirable off-tastes from high intensity sweeteners a thing of the past.”

With APSS™, Sensient Flavors is transferring its classic flavoring expertise into the field of innovative sweetening solutions. Its functionality has already been verified in a wide range of applications, including beverages, dairy, bakery and confectionery. Depending on the individual product concept and its specific technical, sensorial and nutritional demands, Sensient Flavors can offer manufacturers tailor-made solutions that ensure optimized results.
