Frozen Foods Market Report
Report description
Sales of frozen foods rose by 3.6% in 2010, ending the year with a value of £5.29bn. Over Key Note’s total review period — 2006 to 2010 — the market grew by a total of 17.6%.
Key Note divides the frozen foods market into ten sectors for the purpose of this Market Report. These are: meat and meat products; fish and fish products; ice cream; ready meals (excluding pizza); potato products; poultry and poultry products; pizza; vegetables and fruit (excluding potatoes); cakes and desserts; and vegetarian foods. In 2010, meat and meat products accounted for the largest share of the market by value (14.9%), whereas vegetarian foods took up the smallest share, with a value worth only 3.9% of the total market.
Food-price inflation has been a key issue affecting the entire food market, and the frozen foods sector has not been immune to such price rises, with some of the growth in the sector being explained by this. However, faced with rising food prices, consumers are likely to turn to frozen foods as an alternative owing to the competitive pricing that is possible in the frozen foods sector.
This has made frozen foods popular with consumers during the recession, when a weak economy forced a switch from fresh and chilled foods to frozen. As the economy slowly recovers, there is a danger that the resurgence of frozen foods could taper off, which is why companies have been scrambling somewhat with the education of consumers and new product development (NPD) in order to retain the larger consumer base it acquired thanks to the recession.
The notion of consumer education is a major trend in the market; companies are increasingly reaching out to consumers and letting them know about the benefits of frozen foods, such as the higher vitamin content of frozen vegetables over fresh. This is to overcome any lingering negative perceptions consumers may have about frozen foods and draw in new consumers to the sector, thus increasing volume sales. Similarly, innovation has been a key factor; keeping the market new and fresh is another way to increase consumer interest.
Overall, the market performed very strongly over the review period; the reasons for this are twofold. The success of the sector is down to increased volume sales during the recession, as well as food-price inflation increasing the value of the majority of the sectors. In a future that involves high levels of inflation — both in terms of food price and otherwise — as well as one which looks set to see only slow economic growth, issues such as the low prices of products in the frozen foods sector will remain important to consumers who may be struggling financially. This should help to maintain volume sales in the following years, which explains Key Note’s forecast for the value of the frozen foods market in 2015 being £6.04bn; this represents an overall increase of 14.2% from £5.29bn in 2006.
