Paper versus Plastic in Packaging NEW US industry forecasts for 2014 & 2019
Report description
Historical data (1999, 2004, 2009) and forecasts to 2014 and 2019 are provided for competitive paper and plastic packaging markets in pounds and (in some cases) units. In most cases, data in this study reflect raw stock. As a result, poundage totals for paperboard packaging typically do not include plastics used in such containers as liners, coatings, or built-in caps and closures (multiwall shipping sack liners are a notable exception). Data in the study represent the actual poundage of paper or plastic consumed and exclude conversion loss. Sales (or demand, apparent consumption) are defined as all shipments from US plants, plus imports minus exports.
Percentages in the study reflect market shares for paper and plastic in pounds. This may differ from unit or gallon market share due to factors such as the weight of paper versus plastic and the size of items packaged. Moreover, displacement of a pound of paper does not require a pound of plastic. For example, paper shipping sacks accounted for 76 percent of paper and plastic shipping sack poundage and 50 percent of units in 2009, while plastic shipping sacks made up 24 percent of poundage and 50 percent of units. Due to the significance of small containers, paper milk containers represented 28 percent of total milk packaging demand in pounds and 49 percent of units in 2009. Since larger containers constitute a bigger share of milk packaged in plastic, plastic milk containers held 72 percent of milk packaging poundage but only a 51 percent share of milk units. In fruit beverages, paper represented 35 percent of total poundage and 33 percent of units while plastic accounted for 65 percent of poundage and 67 percent of units. The smaller spread between pounds and units reflects greater similarity in the average container size in paper and plastic fruit beverage packaging.
