The volcanic ash cloud sitting over northern Europe has forced the organisers of the World Retail Congress to postpone this year's event, which was due to start on Wednesday (21 April).
The three-day event, due to take place in Berlin, looks set to be pushed back to October, organisers announced this morning.
The flight restrictions implemented in the UK and northern Europe after last week's eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland meant business leaders could not travel to the German city.
"Following the unprecedented disruption to international travel as a result of the volcanic eruption, we have been in close consultation with our speakers, partners and many delegates over the last few days," the organisers said.
"With much of European airspace closed so many speakers and delegates faced huge difficulties reaching Berlin in time for the scheduled event, we have taken the decision to postpone the 2010 World Retail Congress. We now plan to reschedule the event with the same programme at the same venue in Berlin in October 2010."
Executives from Tesco, German giant Metro Group and Russia's largest retailer X5 Retail Group were due to speak at the event.
