just-food's research round-up: baby food in Australia, biscuits in France, cereals in UK
This week's featured research from the just-food store includes reports looking at the latest developments in Australia's baby food market, France's biscuit sector and the UK breakfast cereal industry.
Baby Food in Australia
According to this report from Euromonitor, the size of Australia's baby food sector rose 9% in value terms in 2013. However, the growth was not across the board and was largely confined to milk formula, which experienced growth of 12%. Most of this was not due to demand from Australian parents, but from parents in China. Concerns about the quality of milk formula in China is leading to Chinese parents attempting to source their milk formula from elsewhere around the globe.
Biscuits in France
Demand for biscuits in France, where private-label market leader Biscuit Poult could be set for a change of ownership, was almost stable in 2013. French consumers are increasingly trying to have a healthy and balanced diet and consequently reducing the amount of sugar and salt they eat. As a result, they are paying closer attention to purchases of biscuits. They increasingly buy more savoury biscuits and crackers to eat with drinks before meals.
Global Dairy Innovation 2014 report
Internationally, the dairy sector saw dynamic growth in 2013, the authors behind this report claim. Hundreds of products were introduced, ranging from snacks to drinks, with functions addressing weight management and memory enhancement, among others. With dairy in growth across all sub-sectors, manufacturers have created a number of new products in an effort to capture share of this growing market.

Soup in Canada
The mature soup category in Canada was set decline by 1% in value and volume terms in 2013, according to researchers at Euromonitor. Soups in general have had great difficulty maintaining consumer interest in recent years. Many younger consumers are simply uninterested in packaged soups, finding them boring.
