Italian food group Barilla has opened a EUR40m (US$51.7m) pasta sauce facility in Italy.

The plant, located in Rubbiano di Solignano, near Parma, opened yesterday (8 October) and marks what Barilla says is "an important strategic step" for the company. The facility will be the first from which the group will produce its sauces independently and not with external partners, it said.

Employing around 120 staff, the plant will be dedicated to the production of pasta sauces, with an annual capacity of 35,000 tonnes and potential for 60,000. Around 150 tonnes of tomato-based sauces and 50 tonnes of pesto-based sauces will be produced at the site.

Barilla said it wants to focus its resources on "the growth of the Italian pasta dish" globally and its branded bakery products in Italy and Europe.

"The Rubbiano sauces plant is an example of an investment in quality in Italy with an international outlook," said Guido Barilla, chairman of Barilla Group. "While on the one hand, the ingredients, the recipes and the technology are Italian, the goal is to grow on foreign markets, taking the authentic Italian cuisine all over the world."
