Bonduelle produces Green Giant under licence in Canada

French processed vegetable group Bonduelle has remained coy over reports that it could be looking to strengthen its presence in the US with the acquisition of the Green Giant brand.

According to French daily Les Echos, the chief executive of Bonduelle, which already manufactures Green Giant under licence in Canada for brand-owner General Mills, has said it would purchase the brand from the US food giant if the company decided to sell.

Bonduelle would not directly confirm the reports. However, a spokesperson told just-food today (15 December) that a possible move for Green Giant had been "regularly mentioned" in the market since the company bought Canadian firm Carrière in 2007, which had produced the canned brand under licence.

The spokesperson added that Bonduelle will always "seize opportunities" that arise, adding: "Christophe Bonduelle [CEO] always said that the US was a market Bonduelle was looking at very closely."

However, M. Bonduelle told Les Echos that the firm would not be willing to pay "any price" for Green Giant. He added that, in order to strengthen its presence in the US, it would also be willing to buy "one or two plants" in the country.
