HUNGARY: CBA is biggest supermarket, beats Metspa, Tesco

Locally owned food retailer CBA is Hungary's biggest supermarket, according to the Budapest Business Journal, which cited statistics compiled by AC Nielsen for trade journal Mai Piac.

It is the first time a Hungarian-owned company has topped the list, the paper said. CBA had revenue of 495 bn forints (US2.57bn) in 2004, 90 bn more than in 2003.

CBA was followed by Metspa, the joint supply company of the Hungarian subsidiaries of the German wholesaler Metro and retailer Spar, with revenue of 450 bn forints, 40 bn more than in 2004. In third place was Tesco, with turnover of 415 bn forints, up 60 bn from 2003. Coop Hungary was fourth with turnover of Ft 360 bn, Ft 23 bn more than a year earlier.
