UK: Dairy Farmers of Britain to close dairy

By just-food.com | 24 April 2007

Dairy Farmers of Britain (DFOB) is to close a loss-making dairy in Whitby, North Yorkshire, with the loss of around 95 jobs, the group revealed today (24 April).

"We've come to this difficult decision after a few years of the dairy making quite substantial losses, which now total thousands of pounds each week. It's a case of being unable to sustain production at the site," a DFOB spokesperson told just-food.

DFOB will rationalise its production activities, transferring production of cream and milk to its nine other UK dairy facilities. The group will cease production of UHT milk and cottage cheese, which were only manufactured at Whitby.

Commenting on the timescale of the closure, the spokesperson added: "We've begun the 30-day consultation period with staff and anticipate the site closing around the end of July."
