Canadian food manufacturer Dare Foods has launched what it claims is Canada's first "supergrain" cracker chip.

Breton Popped cracker chips contain a blend of so-called supergrains, including quinoa, amaranth and millet. The product is also trans-fat and cholesterol-free, low in saturated fat and contains no artificial colours or flavours.

"Canadians continue to seek healthy snacks. We wanted to create a product that would appeal to them and one that they would feel good about eating," Kelly McInenly, senior director for bakery marketing at Dare Foods, said.

The range is available in three variants: barbecue, cheddar and sea salt. All are available in 100g packs at major grocery and mass merchandise stores across Canada with a suggested retail price of US$2.99.

The first supergrain cracker chip, Breton® Popped!™, launches across Canada

KITCHENER, ON, March 7, 2013 /CNW/ - Canadians love to snack1 and are in search of "better-for-you" options. To help Canadians find a delicious, guilt-free snack, Dare Foods Limited has introduced Breton® Popped!™, Canada's first supergrain cracker chip. A blend of whole grain "supergrains" is air-popped into naturally flavourful, nutritious cracker chips, making it a healthy alternative to satisfy crunchy cravings.

Like superfruits, "supergrains" are known for their nutritive benefits, such as being high in protein and fibre. Breton® Popped!™ is made with a blend of supergrains, including quinoa, amaranth and millet. To boot, these cracker chips are trans fat and cholesterol free, low in saturated fat and contain no artificial colours or flavours.

Breton® Popped!™ uses an air-popping process that applies heat and pressure to the whole grains. This process ensures the chip's natural flavours are enhanced and that each one is light, airy, crispy and nutritious.

"Canadians continue to seek healthy snacks. We wanted to create a product that would appeal to them and one that they would feel good about eating," said Kelly McInenly, Senior Director Bakery Marketing, Dare Foods Limited. "We used our 30 years of Breton® experience to develop a cracker chip that is packed with wholesome grains, air-popped and so delicious, snackers won't even notice it's healthier."
