BELGIUM/USA: Delhaize may be interested in buying Winn-Dixie stores
Belgian supermarket operator Delhaize has said it may consider purchasing stores from struggling US grocery retailer Winn-Dixie.
Winn-Dixie announced last week that it intended to sell or close 156 stores, mainly in the southeast of the US.
Although headquartered in Belgium, Delhaize does most of its business in the US, where it operates stores under the Food Lion, Hannaford and Harvey's banners.
"We could be interested, depending on the conditions, but it's too early to be more specific. We will have to analyse the locations and then we will decide," Delhaize spokesman Geoffroy d'Oultremont was quoted by Reuters as saying.
"We are in general interested in buying some stores that could reinforce our market position," d'Oultremont added.
