US: Family Dollar comp sales up 6% in Q3

US discount retailer Family Dollar Stores has posted a 6% rise in third-quarter like-for-like sales.

The company yesterday (4 June) reported that comparable-store sales increased by 6.2% during the three months to the end of May.

Revenue was up 8.2% to US$1.84bn, Family Dollar said.

"Sales of consumable merchandise continued to be strong, increasing approximately 13% during the quarter. Notably, sales trends in several discretionary categories improved from what we saw in the second quarter," said chairman and CEO Howard Levine.

Family Dollar's store network numbers 6.654 outlets after opening 26 new stores during the quarter.
