UK: FSA asks for views on front-of-pack labels

By: just-food.com | 30 July 2009

The UK food watchdog has today (30 July) asked for views on "issues that need to be resolved" ahead of any chance of an introduction of a front-of-pack labelling scheme in the country.

The Food Standards Agency is to ask stakeholders to consult on how to combine the words 'high, medium and low', traffic light colours and GDA percentages on labels.

The FSA said an independent study had found that shoppers would "benefit" from a labelling scheme that brought all three elements together.

The consultation period ends on 5 November. Findings will be discussed by the FSA board before it makes recommendations to UK government ministers.

OMG. What a b*gger's muddle! It's doomed to failure... or, worse still, it will be implemented.

When will the world finally realise that 'judgemental' labelling, like traffic lights, is useless because such judgements are over-simplifications: "Eat this, it's good. Don't eat this, it's bad."

Just stick to the facts, Ma'am. Good, old nutritional labelling. It means the poor, old consumer is going to have to think for him or herself... but that's not such a bad thing, is it?

But while we're at it, we should put on a front-of-pack label that says, "Walk the couple of bus stops instead of taking the bus!" or "Walk up the stairs instead of getting the lift or escalator!" or "Stop stuffing your face! It doesn't matter if it's 'healthy'. Enough is enough!"
