IRELAND: Fyffes foray into US winter melon

Fyffes has made a foray into the US winter melon business with the acquisitions of a 60% stake in Florida-based firm and a number of firms in Honduras and Guatemala.

The Irish-based fresh produce group has bought a stake in Florida's Sol Group Marketing Co. Fyffes has also secured the right to ship the fruit imported by Sol Group Marketing from Honduras and Guatemala.

Sol Group Marketing imports around 8m boxes of winter season melons a year into the US, for sale to major retailers and fresh cut fruit processors.

Fyffes chairman David McCann said: "Sol Group Marketing has developed a strong position in the US winter melon sector based on high levels of service and delivery of top quality product to its customers."
