US: General Mills announces salmonella recall

General Mills has recalled its Nut Lovers line of Nature Valley Nut Clusters, the latest in a string of US recalls prompted by food borne illnesses.
The US cereal giant said pecans supplied for the Nut Lovers cereal may be contaminated with salmonella.
No illnesses have been reported and General Mills emphasised that it has issued the recall as a precautionary measure.
Five 'best if used by' dates are included in the recall: 07MAR2010; 08MAR2010; 09MAR2010; 10MAR2010; and 11MAR2010.
No other types of nuts are impacted and no other flavours or varieties of Granola Nut Clusters are involved, the company said.
The news comes as US food safety been put under the microscope following a number of high profile recalls, including most recently Nestlé Toll House cookie dough, JBS Swift beef and a swathe of products containing peanut butter supplied by the Peanut Corporation of America.
Earlier this week, the Obama administration announced that it intended to toughen US food safety regulations, with plans to expand the powers of regulatory bodies and preventative measures for salmonella in eggs, poultry and leafy greens and E. coli in beef.
However, the proposals did not give full details on what action would be required and did not look specifically at how to prevent the spread of salmonella in products containing nuts.
