French dairy giant Lactalis has acquired a majority stake in Slovenian dairy group Ljubljanske Miekarne.

Lactalis has taken a 50.3% stake in what it says is the largest dairy in Slovenia, with a turnover of EUR154m (US$199.7m) in 2001.

The French group acquired the shares of five Slovenian investors: banks Factor Banka Banka and KD, investment companies NFD Holding, KD Group and Sava.

Ljubljanske Mlekarne's activities cover all the dairy categories, producing milk, cream, yoghurts, cheese and ice cream, in four different plants located in Ljubljana, Maribor, Kocevje and Tuzla in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"Ljubljanske Mlekarne will strengthen Lactalis role in the South-East Europe region, where Lactalis Group is a major player on the dairy market," Lactalis said.
