Mars Inc is looking to build its presence in the UK ice cream category with the launch of three new products, including a Chocolate Core.

The three products, which include: Mars & Snickers Mini, Galaxy Almond, and Mars Chocolate Core, launched across the UK today (18 March).

Mars Chocolate Core, which is a classic Mars Ice Cream bar but with a dark chocolate centre will be available in a six-pack multi-pack for a limited time throughout the summer. The product launch echoes that of Ben & Jerry's Core, which launched in February last year.

Galaxy Almond is dairy ice cream covered in Galaxy chocolate and topped with nuts. A TV advert will accompany the launch of this product.

Mars & Snickers Mini aims to build on the success of the two brands that are now available in multi-packs of ten.

2013 looks set to be the biggest year yet for Mars Ice Cream, and we are committed to building our key brands and growing the category even further," said Tony Lorman, general manager of Mars baked and ice cream. "The launch of three new and innovative products is sure to capture consumer attention at the beginning of the year, and the brands will be supported by advertising, PR and in-store activity throughout 2013."

MARS ICE CREAM LAUNCHES NEW PRODUCTS AND EXCITING BRAND PLANS

Mars Ice Cream launches three innovative new products and huge brand support for summer 2013

Summer 2013 is set to be the busiest, and most exciting yet for Mars Ice Cream. To kick off the year, Mars Ice Cream is building on the success of its core Ice Cream and Chocolate brands by introducing three innovative new products. Throughout 2013, Mars Ice Cream is fully committed to supporting its brands and the ice cream category as a whole, through trade and consumer advertising, PR and in-store retailer support.

New Product Development:

Mars & Snickers Mini:

Building on the success of its best-selling brands and Mars Chocolate’s most iconic bars, this year will see the launch of Mars and Snickers Ice Creams in a new Mini format. The Mars and Snickers Mini will be available in Multipacks of 10, and at 74kcal (Mars) and 85kcal (Snickers) consumers can stock their freezers with snack sized, low calorie treats, perfect for dessert, or day-time snacking.

Galaxy Almond:

With 50s Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn™ fronting the new Galaxy Chocolate campaign, and with the revival of the nostalgic strap line ‘Why have cotton when you can have silk?’, Mars Ice Cream is introducing another luxurious product to its Galaxy range of ice creams. Galaxy Almond is brand new to the market and offers consumers another moment of pleasure – with real dairy ice cream, covered in smooth Galaxy chocolate and topped with nuts, a consumer favourite. Galaxy is the UK’s 2nd largest chocolate brand, and with a new TV advert for the Chocolate brand, consumers will be actively looking out for the Galaxy brand in-store, across the product range.

Mars Chocolate Core:

Mars Ice Cream is also launching Mars Chocolate Core. With a dark chocolate infused centre the classic Mars Ice Cream bar is now available as a more indulgent, chocolatey treat. This exciting innovation builds on the popularity of the UK’s most popular chocolate bar, and will be available in a 6-pack multipack for a limited time only throughout the summer in 2013. This new variant will offer consumers who love Mars Ice Cream the chance to indulge in a dark chocolate infused version of their favourite treat, perfect as a portion controlled dessert.

Other brand news and performance:

TWIX®, the UK’s only biscuit ice cream, has been awarded the prestigious 2013 Product of the Year award, within the desserts category. This award was judged by a consumer panel of 10,005. This is an amazing result for the brand which built a huge consumer following in 2012. Retailers should be looking to ensure they are stocked up on both singles and multipack variants of Twix® Ice Cream as the on-pack ‘Product of the Year’ label will boost consumer demand.

Following a successful year in 2012, Mars Ice Cream holds 4 of the top 20 singles, as Mars, Snickers, Maltesers and Bounty remain consumer favourites. With Mars and Snickers ice cream multipacks currently featuring in the top 20 multipacks, retailers should consider these products essentials, capitalising on the growing trend of at-home entertainment and impulse purchases.

Tony Lorman, General Manager Mars Baked and Ice Cream comments: “2013 looks set to be the biggest year yet for Mars Ice Cream, and we are committed to building our key brands and growing the category even further. The launch of three new and innovative products is sure to capture consumer attention at the beginning of the year, and the brands will be supported by advertising, PR and in-store activity throughout 2013. As part of our role as a leading manufacturer of best-loved ice cream products we are committed to building retailer confidence and driving the Ice Cream Bar category as a whole through innovation and support for our best-loved brands.”

James Hay, Senior Brand Manager, Mars Ice Cream comments: “With the days getting longer, more consumers will be looking to enjoy ice cream. Although retailers should ensure they keep ice cream stocked up throughout the year, as we enter the Spring and Summer months, there are even more opportunities for retailers to grow ice cream sales. Mars Ice Cream offer consumer favourites in both single and multipack formats, appealing to both the impulsive nature of ice cream bar purchases and the growing in-home sharing trend. We are committed to supporting retailers and growing the category in 2013, and are particularly excited about our new innovation this year.”
