More than six working women out of 10 say they skip lunch at least once a week -- and it isn't necessarily because they're dieting.

They simply don't have the time.

According to a new survey of lunchtime eating habits sponsored by BLIMPIE Subs & Salads (Amex: BLM), 61 percent of working women say they are "too busy for lunch." Perhaps surprisingly, only 5 percent said they forgo lunch because they're trying to lose weight.

In addition, half of the women who skip lunch at least once a week manage to bypass this important meal up to two or three times a week, according to the BLIMPIE Subs & Salads' "Too Busy For Lunch" survey, which was conducted across the U.S. by Caravan ORC International.

"Working mothers wouldn't let their children go without lunch, so why are they shorting themselves?" asked Tony Conza, founder and chief executive officer of Blimpie International. "Taking a break for lunch and eating a healthy meal not only fuels your body but also gives the mind a much needed midday work break."

A healthy lunch doesn't have to take all afternoon, nor would most working women want it to. According to the survey, more than half the respondents cite a sandwich as their top choice for a "convenient meal," with a salad coming in second.

Nutritionists agree that a light lunch is preferable to no lunch, pointing out that even a low-fat meal of 500 calories can provide enough fuel for a productive afternoon. For a healthy meal that can produce energy for the rest of the workday, BLIMPIE recommends a BLIMPIE Turkey Sub (a low-fat protein), on whole wheat bread (a complex carbohydrate), topped "The BLIMPIE Way" -- tomatoes, lettuce, onion, vinegar, oil, and oregano (vitamins and minerals and lots of flavor).
