EU: MEPs save smoky bacon crisps from Euro-ban
The threat of a European Union ban on smoky bacon flavoured crisps has been averted with the European Parliament passing amendments to proposed EU food safety legislation allowing all existing smoking practices to continue.
Instead, only new smoke flavourings in foods would have to be approved by the European Food Safety Authority, said the parliament.
MEPs could veto the proposal, so if the move is resisted by the EU Council of Ministers, there is an excellent chance that their protection of existing food smoking traditions will stand. The European Commission had proposed an authorised list of untreated wood available for smoking, threatening the classic crisp style.
