The Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry has not been informed about Russia's ban on imports of vegetables and fruit from Moldova, according to minister Anatoly Gorodenk, the Novosti news agency reports.

He was commenting on Russian media reports that Russia imposed a ban on imports of vegetables and fruit from Moldova from 16 May because these products do not meet international standards.

According to Gorodenko, the Moldovan embassy in Russia is trying to find the official source of these statements. After that, this problem can be put on the agenda of the joint Moldovan-Russian commission for economic cooperation, Gorodenko said. He is a cochairman of this commission.

Moldova exported 538,000 tonnes of vegetables (25% less than in the same period last year) and 42,800 tonnes of fruit (214% more) to Russia in the first three months of 2005.
