UK: Morrisons' Bolland relinquishes duties
By: just-food.com | 4 December 2009
Morrisons chief executive Marc Bolland has stepped down from his operational responsibilities at the UK's fourth-largest retailer - two months earlier than scheduled.
Bolland will replace Sir Stuart Rose as chief executive of fellow UK retailer Marks and Spencer in the new year.
In a statement issued today (4 December), Morrisons said that trading arrangements for Christmas are "progressing smoothly" and that senior management is now focusing on plans and operations for the new year.
"It was therefore agreed at a scheduled board meeting yesterday that it would be appropriate for Marc Bolland to relinquish his operational responsibilities with effect from today," the UK retailer said.
The executive directors will continue to run the group in the "ordinary course of business" and the executive board will now be chaired by Sir Ian Gibson, the group's non-executive chairman, Morrisons added.
Gibson said: "Morrisons has a strong and capable senior management team which will continue to operate the business. We are well placed for a successful Christmas period and a strong end to our current financial year."
