US: Safeway recalls beef amid salmonella scare

By: just-food.com | 7 December 2009

Safeway has recalled 22,000lbs of ground beef produced by Cargill subsidiary Beef Packers, over fears of a possible link to a salmonella outbreak.

The recall has taken place across all Arizona stores, including several in New Mexico, the US retailer said on Friday (4 December).

The products recalled have sell-by dates of 28 September through to 11 October 2009.

Safeway officials said that, while the meat products are no longer being sold in stores, customers are requested to check their freezers and throw out the items, including all fresh ground beef being sold at full-service counters of Arizona Safeway stores.

The products include fresh ground beef, fresh ground beef patties, fresh meat balls, fresh meat loaf and fresh bell peppers stuffed with beef and pork.

"As a result of an ongoing investigation into illnesses from Salmonella Newport associated with ground beef products, the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) notified FSIS of the situation," the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

"Epidemiological and traceback investigations conducted by FSIS and ADHS determined that there is an association between the fresh ground beef products and two illnesses reported in Arizona."
