USA: Smithfield in beef recall on E. coli concerns

US meatpacking giant Smithfield Foods yesterday [Monday] said it had recalled 203,600 pounds of fresh ground beef products on concerns they may be contaminated with E. coli. The meat in question had been distributed by Smithfield plant Moyer Packing, based in Souderton, Pennsylvania, to 11 US states, mostly in the Northeast. The recall was initiated after government tests found meat samples contaminated with the potentially deadly E. coli bacteria.
