Tesco will open two Tesco Extra stores in the Czech Republic over the next two months.

Existing hypermarkets in Plzen will be remodelled to outlets that include services such as a chemist's, an optician and a photo lab.

A spokesperson for Tesco in the Czech Republic said the UK retailer was launching the format in the country as part of its strategy to improve its business in the country.

"The company constantly strives to expand its portfolio of goods, improve its services and modernise its stores, notwithstanding the fact this format has already met with success in its home country, the UK," the spokesperson said.

Tesco already runs one Extra store in the Slovak capital Bratislava. The spokesperson said the number of customers visiting the Extra store in Bratislava had grown by 30% since it opened in April.

Tesco, which operates 140 outlets, in the Czech Republic, said in January that it planned to open 30 stores this year in the country. So far, the retailer has opened nine outlets.
