Wal-Mart executive Krish Iyer has been promoted to lead the US retail giant's operations in India.

Iyer, a senior vice president within Wal-Mart's international business, will take up the role from 20 January.

The appointment comes two months after the end of Wal-Mart's joint venture in India with local conglomerate Bharti Enterprises.

Iyer is replacing interim CEO Ramnik Narsey, who is taking the role of senior vice president for Wal-Mart International. He will report to Scott Price, CEO of Wal-Mart's business in Asia.

Originally from Mumbai, India, Iyer joined Wal-Mart as senior vice president last year. Prior to this, he spent six years with health, beauty and lifestyle retailer A.S. Watson, serving as managing director in Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines.

"Krish will be responsible for leading the growth and success of our India operations while also continuing to develop our future retail strategy there," Price said. "His knowledge of our business, combined with his understanding of the Indian market and culture, make him a natural fit for this role."
