Future Key Global Cheese Markets 2009 (download)According to this new report from marketing consultancy Proteus Insight, the global economic downturn reversed several years of positive growth in developing markets outside the European Union and North America. The company researched and examined 68 markets in Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa and the Caucasus. By the end of 2008, overall volume consumption across these markets was down 0.5%; however, currency fluctuations and a tightening up of consumer spending across these markets led to an 8.5% and 2.5% decrease in € and $ terms respectively. Eastern Europe was hit particularly hard, with consumption and spending dropping in Ukraine and Serbia following the economies needing assistance from the IMF. Processed cheese volume sales across the 68 markets increased 1.4%, with spreads leading the way accounting for 70% of processed volume sales and driving the category as slices sales remained static. Key regions for processed cheese consumption remained the Middle East and North Africa, where overall processed cheese volumes were up 2.8%. White and mature cheese varieties struggled, with volumes down 0.7% and 0.5% on 2007 levels. Despite the reversal in 2008, these 68 markets still represent potential for market development. In particular, these markets represent great potential for manufacture brand development as private label products have not penetrated to the extent found in Western Europe or North America even though key accounts such as Carrefour and Tesco have established themselves in many of these markets. Of the approximate 4,500,000 tonnes of cheese consumed across the 68 markets, less than 2% were key accounts own labels.
