Canadian convenience store operator Couche-Tard has reported better-than-expected profits for the second quarter, helped by its growing operations in the US convenience store market. The Montreal-based company posted earnings of C$26m (US$20.0m), or 30 cents a share, for the second quarter to 12 October, compared to $21m, or 24 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts had been expecting, on average, earnings of 27 cents a share, reported Reuters.

US energy company ConocoPhillips has said it has signed an agreement to sell Circle K Corporation to Canadian grocer Alimentation Couche-Tard. Couche-Tard said the acquisition price is US$820.9m plus the assumption of $9.1m in debt. The grocer said the deal would make it the fourth-largest convenience store operator in North America, reported Dow Jones.

Canadian grocery retailer Alimentation Couche-Tard has said it will expand its presence in the US Midwest with the acquisition of 43 convenience stores from Clark Retail Enterprises, which filed for bankruptcy protection last autumn. Montreal-based Couche-Tard, which operates stores under the Couche-Tard, Mac’s and Dairy Mart banners, said it expect to complete the US$24.5m deal in August after receiving court approval, reported Reuters.

Canadian convenience store chain Alimentation Couche-Tard has reported a 38% rise in third-quarter profit due to higher sales at its expanded US network. The Montreal-based company, which operates under the Couche-Tard, Mac’s, Backer’s and Dairy Mart banners, said it earned C$14m (US$9.4m) in the quarter to 2 February, compared to $10.2m a year earlier.

Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard has acquired Tabatout, a Quebec network of 30 stores in shopping centres and office buildings. Couche-Tard, which operates 2,266 stores across Canada and in the US Midwest, is reported to be paying C$2.5m (US$1.6m) for Tabatout. Tabatout has annual sales of around C$15m, reported the National Post.

Canadian convenience store operator Alimentation Couche-Tard has reported earnings of C$21m (US$13m) for the twelve weeks to 13 October, compared to $16.1m for the same period last year. Canadian retailer Alimentation Couche-Tard has announced it might be interested in purchasing stores owned by North Carolina-based Swifty Serve, which has recently said it will seek bankruptcy protection. Swifty Serve had previously reduced its number of stores in the south-eastern states from 560 to 450 in a bid to survive, but is now facing bankruptcy, reported the Toronto Star.

The company explained that the Dairy Mart acquisition is expected to add about C$700m (US$693.8m) to its annual sales.

Alimentation Couche-Tard, the leader in the Canadian convenience store industry, has closed the acquisition of the assets of Hudson, Ohio-based Dairy Mart Convenience Stores. In a deal conducted through its US subsidiary Mac's Convenience Stores, Laval, Quebec-based Couche-Tard paid US$79.5m for 287 Dairy Mart stores, a figure that includes US$13.5m for the inventories of these stores.

Columbus, Ind-based Bigfoot Foodstores, the US subsidiary of Canadian convenience store giant Couche-Tard, has announced a name change. Not called Mac's Convenience Stores, this subsidiary will operate the networks under the Bigfoot, Dairy Mart, Handy Andy and Mac's banners.

Canadian grocer Metro has posted a 20.5% increase in net earnings to C$45.9m (US$28.99m) for its Q3 ended 6 July, compared to C$38.1m year on year. Fully diluted net earnings per share (EPS) for the Q3 grew 21.6% to C$0.45.

Quebec-based convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard revealed that its 6 June bid to acquire the assets of Dairy Mart Convenience Stores has been retained at the closing of the bid deadline. The Hudson, Ohio-based Dairy Mart, a regional convenience retailing chain with some 450 stores, filed voluntary petitions with the Court for the Southern District of New York on 24 September 2001, seeking protection under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code.

Canadian convenience-store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard has signed an agreement in principle to purchase a network of 12 stores from Bruce Miller Oil Company (ten fee-owned locations and two supply dealer accounts) in Southeastern Indiana and the Cincinnati Metro Area in Ohio. Quebec-based Couche-Tard is already the ninth-largest convenience retailer in the US, and the acquisition will thereby increase its presence in the US Midwest where it has been active in three states since acquiring Johnson Oil Co in June 2001.
