USA: Kraft Foods names Lowry senior vice president, development

Kraft Foods, Inc., the nation's largest branded food company, announced today that Margo Lowry, 52, has been appointed to the newly created post of Senior Vice President, Development. She will also be a member of Kraft's Operating Committee. Lowry will report to Irene Rosenfeld, Group Vice President, Operations and Technology and President Kraft Canada. She will be responsible for leading Kraft's expanded New Business Development function, which will both create development opportunities new to Kraft as well as coordinate new product activities across the company's 70 major brands. "Growth through new business and new product development are key to Kraft's goal of undisputed leadership of the food industry," said Rosenfeld. "Margo has a proven track record of developing new brands, as well as revitalizing established ones. Her leadership will help set our new product agenda for the future." Lowry first joined Kraft in 1977 as an Associate Product Manager for General Foods Corporation (which later merged with Kraft, Inc.). After holding several positions of increasing responsibility in brand management, Lowry became Venture Development Manager in 1987 for the Post cereals business. Two years later, she became a Category Manager, and in 1994 she was named Business Development Director for Post cereal. During her tenure at Kraft, she launched such new product successes as Post's Banana Nut Crunch, Waffle Crisp and Oreo O's cereals. Lowry left Kraft in 1997 for a position at Campbell Soup Company. USA: General Mills earnings per share up 10 percent in fiscal 2001 first quarter

General Mills today reported record results for its fiscal 2001 first quarter. Diluted earnings per share were 55 cents, up 10 percent from the 50 cents per share earned in the same period last year. Diluted earnings per share excluding goodwill amortization also grew 10 percent to 57 cents. For the 13-week period ended Aug. 27, 2000, earnings before interest and taxes increased 8 percent to $296 million. Interest expense in the quarter was higher, due to increased debt levels associated with prior year acquisitions and share repurchase activity. As a result, earnings after tax were essentially even with last year's at $159 million. First-quarter sales grew 6 percent to $1.67 billion.Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Steve Sanger said the first-quarter results represented a good start to the year. "General Mills' current businesses are continuing to deliver excellent topline and bottomline growth. These first-quarter results put us on track to meet our full-year financial objectives," Sanger said.

The Quaker Oats Company (NYSE: OAT) announced today that Margaret A. Stender will join the Company as President -- Ready-To-Eat cereals. Ms. Stender succeeds Harry M. Dent, who is leaving the Company to pursue other interests.Stender, 43, has extensive experience in the packaged foods industry, including 13 years previously with The Quaker Oats Company. She began her Quaker career in 1983, assuming increasing responsibilities in the Company's hot cereals, pet foods and beverage businesses. She left Quaker in 1996 and became vice president of Marketing-Programming at Ameritech's Americast Cable Television, and in 1999 became senior vice president and general manager of Consumer Travel Solutions for Rand McNally.In her new role at Quaker, Stender will have accountability for running the Company's ready-to-eat cereals business, which had 1999 sales of $725 million.
