The total number of robotics-related grants dropped by 12% in Q3 2022, according to GlobalData’s whitepaper on Robotics in Consumer – Patenting Activity in Q3 2022.

Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the consumer industry was 370 in Q3 2022, versus 655 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 24% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that LG filed the most robotics patents within the consumer industry in Q3 2022. The company filed 47 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 86 in the previous quarter. It was followed by iRobot with 17 robotics patent filings, Samsung Group (8 filings), and Beijing Roborock Technology (8 filings) in Q3 2022.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 29% share of total patent filings

The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q3 2022 was in the US with 29%, followed by China (14%) and South Korea (10%). The share represented by the US was 11% higher than the 18% share it accounted for in Q2 2022.
