Tunisia’s baby food sector is relatively small in terms of total size, however per capita consumption of the baby populace of 0-3 years is higher than the global average. The continuous decline in live births and the overall baby population since 2015, coupled with the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, took a toll on the market during 2019-2020.

The sector is heavily dominated by baby milks which account for the lion’s share by value (70.2%) and volume (53.8%). This continuing importance is due to the decline in breastfeeding rates, as a result of which breast milk substitutes have become a commonplace in Tunisia. However, wet meals are showing the most growth in value terms, as more sophisticated products have come on-stream. Baby drinks, in contrast, have proved relatively difficult to market at a time when household budgets are under pressure.

Tunisia is heavily dependent on imports of baby foods as only a few multinationals such as Pharmalys, have manufacturing facilities within the country. Pharmalys is the clear leader in baby milks, and the sector, while Nestle leads in cereals, and Materna dominates wet meals.

GlobalData forecasts that birth numbers will continue to fall slowly up to 2026. However, a continuing economic improvement, coupled with price falls, should see per capita consumption increase.

• Baby milks account for two-thirds of value sales and over half of volume sales. Since 2014, milks have strengthened their position within the sector, while cereals have seen their share of sales decline: in 2014, cereals accounted for 25.9% of value sales, compared with 28% in 2014.
• Within the total sector, wet meals have grown significantly in volume terms , although all categories except drinks have experienced an increase in retail sales at constant 2014 prices.
• Tunisia is heavily reliant on imports, as none of the major multinationals have manufacturing facilities within the country. Pharmalys, however, has an infant formula plant in Tunisia, which uses ingredients imported from Switzerland. Exports of milks and cereals are now negligible, following Nestlé’s switch of baby cereal production to Morocco
• Baby food is available through pharmacies and food retail outlets, but it is pharmacies, thanks to their role in infant formula distribution, that dominate, with 76.6% of volume sales in 2020.
