Amul said time was right to launch branded lactose-free milk

The co-operative behind Indian dairy brand Amul is set to launch the country's first branded lactose-free milk.

R. S. Sodhi, the managing director of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, said the product would start rolling out next month.

Sodhi said it is the right time to launch the milk as there is no competition. He insisted consumers would pay a premium due to the health benefits of the product. However, Sodhi did not disclose at what price the milk would be sold.

The milk will be manufactured at Amul's plant in Gujarat. Production could be expanded to sites in the states of Haryana, Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra if there is sufficient demand, an official at Amul added.

The company refused to be drawn on where the product would first go on sale.
