The European Commission has issued a regulation that will require the labels of fish and seafood products to contain more detailed information to better inform consumers and help officials better police the common Fisheries Policy.

From 1 January 2002, the commercial name of the species, the area and type of water the fish was caught and whether the product was wild or cultivated will be included on the label.

"Consumers will find it easier to choose their fisheries.....Greater traceability will also facilitate the monitoring of fisheries products from the ship to the shop, enhancing conservation of fish stocks", said Franz Fischler, EU Commissioner for fisheries and agriculture.
