Groupe Casino, the France-based food retailer, is not looking to enter the Algerian market, just-food understands.

Reports claimed yesterday (28 May) that Casino, which has extensive operations in the emerging markets of Asia and Latin America, was planning to break into Algeria.

However, it emerged today that the company had no plans to open up shop in the market.

Casino, however, declined to comment when contacted by just-food.

The retailer has a set of burgeoning businesses in Asia and Latin America and last month posted robust sales figures for the region.

During the first three months of the year, Casino saw sales rise by over a fifth in South America and by 12.6% in Asia.

Group revenue reached EUR6.9bn (US$10.7bn), a rise of 25.6% on the year.
