Australian retailer Coles has quashed rumours it is to slash its product range by a third.

In a statement today (15 October), Coles said, as part of its work to turn around the business, it is trialling a number of "retailing concepts and experiments" in selected stores.

Reports had suggested Coles was to reduce the number of products it sells by 30%, as well as cut the number of weekly discounts and promotions and increase the number of private- or own-label products it sells.

Not stating the location, the retailer said it plans to trial changes to the products it sells by "reducing the range in some product categories and expanding the range in others".

"While we believe there are potential opportunities to improve the range mix in our stores to offer customers more choice, at the moment we are talking about a trial in one store," Coles said.
