Nordic food maker Fazer Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Seniori Ateria, a company that provides foodservice products aimed at seniors in private and sheltered homes in Finland.

Fazer said the move would expand the presence of its foodservice business in the care home area, which is “one of the chosen growth sectors” for the group.

“Our mission is to create taste sensations. Seniors are one of the chosen customer groups in our strategy whose needs we want to concentrate on in the future, and we want to offer taste sensations and new services to this growing group of people. In addition to a high-quality business, this acquisition brings Fazer a lot of competence in developing offering and acknowledging senior customers’ special needs,” Jaana Korhola, MD of the company’s foodservice business in Finland, said.

Fazer valued the Finnish senior foodservice market at EUR300m (US$327.5m), of which EUR55m is outsourced. Fazer accounts for EUR14m of these sales in the country.

Seniori Ateria was founded in 2008 and generates annual revenues in the region of EUR2m, Fazer revealed. The group employs 20 people across its manufacturing and logistics operations.

The bakery-to-confectionery group also suggested the acquisition will strengthen the quality of its foodservice offering, delivering “tailor-made tasty and healthy home meals” to ageing people.

“Fazer wants to strengthen its position as the leading food service provider in the Nordic countries. We are now continuing to execute our growth strategy in Finland by acquiring Seniori Ateria, a growing company that offers quality home meals. This company specialises in taste sensations and customer service, just like Fazer,” said Christoph Vitzthum, Fazer president and CEO.

Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed by the family-owned group.
