Florida's honey industry may create a marketing cooperative to help America's third largest honey-producing state survive the assault by mites, hurricanes and cheap imports.

The continued viability of the sector may lie in vertical integration, development of standards and specifications, and brand awareness campaigns for Florida honey.

The state has over 100 commercial producers, producing more than 9 million kg of honey last year, valued at more than US$19.9m. The vast majority of Florida honey is shipped out of state and commercially blended with honey from other sources.
Foreign imports are sold at up to 50% below Florida prices.
