New regulations announced by New South Wales Health Minister Craig Knowles earlier this week compel restaurants to tell diners which dishes contain monosodium glutamate (MSG). While packaged food already has to alert consumers to the presence of MSG, foodservice providers were hitherto exempt from this requirement. Restaurants which fail to make diners aware of MSG will in future face fines of up to A$5500 (US$2,927).
