James McCann has joined Ahold

Ahold has appointed James McCann in a newly-created development role just a month after he surprisingly left rival retailer Carrefour.

McCann was previously executive director for Carrefour's domestic unit in France. However, he only spent 14 months in the role and left Carrefour in May shortly before the retailer forecast a 35% fall in half-year profits from its French division.

However, Ahold has appointed McCann - who has also held roles at Tesco and Sainsbury's - to its executive board as chief commercial and development officer.

The Dutch retailer said yesterday (30 June) that McCann will be responsible for leading Ahold's e-commerce initiatives and will strengthen its online business globally. Additionally, he will play a role in expanding the company's operations in new markets.

"James has an impressive background of working in leading roles for a number of international retailers in various countries. His experience in developing businesses in different markets, and his knowledge in e-commerce, building customer relationships and strengthening loyalty, will help us accelerate our initiatives in these key growth areas for our business," said CEO Dick Boer.
