US dairy giant Dean Foods has hired Hershey executive Gregg Tanner to oversee its supply chain.

The company today (26 October) named Tanner executive vice president and chief supply chain officer. Tanner will take up the role on 5 November.

Tanner has spent the last two years at Hershey, where he was senior vice president, global operations. The US confectionery giant is in the middle of overhauling its supply chain in a bid to boost efficiency and margins.

Dean Foods chairman and CEO Gregg Engles said Tanner's "strong track-record" would be a "tremendous asset" to the company as it looks to cut costs and drive efficiency.

Dean Foods, the largest milk processor in the US, has suffered this year as dairy costs continue to rise.

In a bid to reduce costs, Dean Foods has already cut up to 700 jobs from its workforce.

The company has also cut its earnings guidance for the third quarter.
