Kinnerton to produce Magnum chocolate

UK confectioner Kinnerton has entered into a licensing deal with Unilever that will see ice cream brands including Magnum and Cornetto launched into confectionery.

Kinnerton will manufacture Magnum, Cornetto and Mini Milk branded chocolates, the companies announced.

Julie McCleave, Unilever UK head of licensing, said bringing Unilever's brands into the chocolate count line was expected to be a "winning combination". Rachel Wyatt, Kinnerton MD, added the launch would drive category sales and generate "consumer excitement".

The new products will be available this month and the launch will be supported by a marketing campaign, including outdoor marketing.

Kinnerton is now owned by German food group Zertus. It moved into Zertus's ownership after the German firm acquired Zetar last year.

MAGNUM, CORNETTO AND MINI MILK ENTER A NEW LICENSING AGREEMENT WITH KINNERTON CONFECTIONERY

Unilever UK is set to expand its licensing portfolio by teaming with Britain's largest independent manufacturer of chocolate and novelty confectionery, Kinnerton. The agreement will see Magnum, the UK's number one ice cream brand1, Cornetto, the biggest branded filled cone brand2 and Mini Milk, the popular product in the Wall's Kids range launch in confectionery format for the first time ever in the UK market, effective from April 2013.

The Chocolate Count Line category is worth an impressive £692 million and continues to grow 3. Within this, branded lines account for approximately 92% of products4, demonstrating consumer appetite for brands they recognise in an alternative format.

Julie McCleave, Head of Licensing at Unilever UK comments: "We're delighted to announce our exciting new licensing partnership with leading confectionery supplier, Kinnerton. We are confident that bringing Unilever's iconic ice cream brands - Magnum, Cornetto and Mini Milk - to market in a confectionary format will be a winning combination for retailers".

Rachel Wyatt, Marketing Director at Kinnerton Confectionery adds: "We tested the range with consumers and both the concept and product scored extremely highly. In fact, the scores that we received were amongst the highest that we've ever seen. We're confident that launching Magnum, Cornetto and Mini Milk chocolates into the UK Chocolate Count Line category for the first time it will bring additional consumer excitement as well as drive sales for the category.

Julie McCleave added: "As the UK's largest Ice Cream manufacturer5, with market leading brands boasting strong taste credentials, we're well placed to enter into the Chocolate Count Line category. By offering consumers confectionery from brands they trust, along with the clear and comprehensive strategies that Kinnerton has presented to us, we're confident that the launch will capitalise on the growth in this market".

The partnership between Unilever ice cream brands and Kinnerton will be supported by a marketing campaign in 2013 which will include outdoor advertising.
