Kraft Foods is to invest EUR4.8m (US$7.2m) at a biscuit plant in France to develop a new line of savoury snacks.

The investment, for the company's Lu plant in La haye fouassière, on the outskirts of Nantes, will be used to create a line of crackers under the Belin brand.

"The aim of the investment is to bring additional manufacturing capacity," a spokesperson for Kraft told just-food.

More information on the snack line is expected next month.

Last week, the company announced plans to build a EUR15m biscuits R&D centre south-west of Paris.

The facility in Saclay, a suburb of the French capital, will act as its "European centre of expertise" for biscuits and focus on NPD for brands including Lu, Oreo and Mikado.
