French dairy products group, Lactalis, has acquired a majority stake in family firm Cema which makes margarine brand Primevere.

The deal is subject to approval from France's fair trade commission.

Primevere is the French market leader in volume terms for anti-cholesterol margarines and second in terms of value behind Unilever's ProActiv.

Based near Lille, Cema employs around 100 staff and has an annual turnover of 50 million euros. Cema will retain its sales networks, staff and production facilities.

French leader for "spreadables" with its Bridel and President brands, Lactalis' stake in Cema marks Lactalis' entry into the vegetable fats market.
