A Massachusetts company is launching a line of eggs laser-etched with expiration dates and codes tracing each egg from farm to shelf.

Concerned about agro-terrorism and traceability demands, Radlo Foods' Born Free Eggs will include discard dates as well as numbers tracing the history of each egg. The company will also offer sealed cartons that allow consumers to examine eggs through plastic.

The US government has warned that eggs are among the foods most vulnerable to terrorist tampering, but the laser etching is part of a larger traceability management system, including sensors monitoring air, water, and cold storage, and testing and vaccination of chickens for salmonella. The eggs have already been test marketed at about 1,000 US supermarkets.
