Australian food distributor Metcash Trading has said that its first-quarter sales have met company expectations despite difficult trading conditions.

Metcash chairman Carlos S. Dos Santos said at the company's annual meeting that "trading conditions are tough and this is expected to continue for the remainder of the year," reported Dow Jones International News.

Earlier this year the company reported sales of A$7.05bn (US$4.96bn) for the year to 30 April, up 7% from the previous year.
